THALAMUS
“A New Approach To Mental Health”
A faith-integrated, holistic recovery initiative that helps stroke survivors regain brain function, improve mental health, and restore quality of life through medical, therapeutic, and spiritual care.
This program will combine neuroscience-based rehab with emotional support, cognitive exercises, mental wellness tools, and biblical encouragement.
What We See
Central to Helping Others To Overcome’s vision is the concept of helping each client to maintain stability through their tragedy, an unwavering belief in the potential of every individual to regain positive baseline function in their lives while resuming being an asset within their families and communities. According to statistical data from the US Census Bureau, in 2021, 28 million individuals did not have health insurance. This means that there are millions of individuals who, by law, are required to get medical care to prevent death, but without health coverage, many individuals may be in jeopardy of not getting back to baseline operation due to not having access to rehabilitative measures. They are also expected to heal at home without expert medical support or supplies. And mental health services most often are not available to help prevent depression or even suicide. With an organization like H2O in operation, we close the door to bullying epidemics like homelessness, starvation, and crime. Helping Others To Overcome exists to ensure that we can be of help by assisting families to breathe through their tragedy more easily with compassionate, intentional, and focused efforts. We envision a society where every person is given the tools, resources, and support they need to thrive. This includes access to financially supportive services, quality education, quality mental health services, job opportunities, mentorship programs, and skills training. Empowerment is not a gift bestowed upon others; it is about creating pathways for individuals to continue looking forward to tomorrow, pursue their passions, and achieve their goals.

The Problem
Within our community, a pressing issue emerges the urgent need for robust mental health support, particularly among our youth and elderly individuals. A multitude of factors, including poverty, trauma, isolation, and discrimination, converge to create a landscape marked by high rates of depression, anxiety, and various mental health disorders. Tragically, many individuals within these vulnerable populations face barriers to accessing affordable and culturally competent mental health care, resulting in untreated conditions and a diminished quality of life.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that approximately 1 in 4 people worldwide will experience a mental health condition at some point in their lives. Depression is one of the most prevalent mental health disorders globally. It affects more than 264 million people of all ages worldwide. Anxiety disorders are also common, with an estimated 284 million people affected globally. Suicide is a significant public health concern. Globally, close to 800,000 people die by suicide each year, making it the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. Mental health conditions often begin in adolescence or early adulthood. It is estimated that half of all mental health conditions begin by the age of 14, and 75% by the mid-20s. Mental health conditions have a substantial impact on productivity and economic well-being. Depression and anxiety alone are estimated to cost the global economy over $1 trillion per year in lost productivity. There is a significant treatment gap for mental health disorders globally. It is estimated that around two-thirds of people with a known mental health condition do not seek help from a health professional.
